Song Review: fromis_9 Could Have Done Worse With 'Glass Shoes'

So I never did get around to reviewing ‘Idol School’ because I have this thing called a life so I barely have any time for anything anymore, but I’ve been keeping up with the final group a bit. The top 9 girls from the show formed fromis_9, which may be one of the stupidest group names I’ve heard in a while but sure let’s go with it. They haven’t officially debuted yet, but they did just release their pre-release track ‘Glass Shoes’, and, well, it’s something.

The aesthetic is what I expected from the group even before the teasers were released. ‘Idol School’ was a not-so-subtle nod to stereotypical j-pop girl group style, so I expected a school girl vibe. And, yeah, that’s the style. There’s not much to say about the music video besides that. The girls look cute; the styling is predictable.

I will say that they fucked Saerom up with this hair style though. She was one of the memorable beauties of ‘Idol School’ and they went and messed her up.

There’s not really much to say about the song. I was expecting a GFriend/APink hybrid and that’s exactly what I got. It’s reasonably catchy, none of the girls sound out of place, and I don’t mind replaying it. What I wasn’t expecting was the quality. It’s not as well-polished as one would hope, but it’s not horrible.

The dance is alright. We only see glimpses of it during the MV, which is fine. They did, however, perform the entire song at MAMA Japan, and we got to see the whole dance.

They seem to have changed the dance slightly, but it looks clean and cohesive. The moves fit with the song. Some of these girls aren’t dancers, so I wasn’t expecting a dance heavy song. It’s a little boring, but whatever. It’s a pre-release so it’s not as bad as it could be.

Overall, ‘Glass Shoes’ is not the mess I had feared, and shows that the group has some promise. I do hope that their actual debut has some punch to it though; ‘Idol School’ and fromis_9 don’t have a lot of hype and a good song could broaden their fanbase some.

Though I’m still a little bitter because at this point I’m convinced that Hayoung has some magic in her and that she somehow killed Crayon Pop’s Soyul’s career using it.

Like seriously she looks like Soyul.
